What is Claude Code and Why Is Everyone Freaking Out About It?

By Mark FershteynPublished Last updated 12 min read

What is Claude Code? A Google engineer admitted it did in 1 hour what her team took a year to build. Here's what's actually happening—and why you don't need to be technical to use it.

If you've been watching the AI headlines and feeling like everyone got a memo you didn't-you're not alone.

In early January 2026, a Google engineer confessed publicly that Claude Code reproduced in one hour what her team spent a year building. The post hit 5.4 million views before most people finished their coffee.

I'm not joking and this isn't funny. We have been trying to build distributed agent orchestrators at Google since last year. There are various options, not everyone is aligned... I gave Claude Code a description of the problem, it generated what we built last year in an hour.

That same week, Andrej Karpathy-the guy who built Tesla's autopilot AI-admitted he feels behind:

@karpathy

I've never felt this much behind as a programmer. The profession is being dramatically refactored as the bits contributed by the programmer are increasingly sparse and between. I have a sense that I could be 10X more powerful if I just properly string together what has become available over the last ~year...

He added: "Clearly some powerful alien tool was handed around except it comes with no manual and everyone has to figure out how to hold it and operate it."

If AI legends feel behind, where does that leave the rest of us?

Here's what I'll tell you: Claude Code is the first AI tool that made me rethink how I work. Not because of the hype. Because I watched it do in 20 minutes what used to take me a day.

Let me show you what's actually happening.

Context

What Is Claude Code, Actually?

Claude Code is an AI assistant that does the work-not just talks about it.

Here's the difference:

ToolWhat It Does
ChatGPTGives you text you copy, paste, and pray works. You're still doing the work.
Claude CodeReads your files, writes code, runs it, and hands you the finished thing. You describe. It builds.

ChatGPT is the consultant who writes recommendations. Claude Code is the contractor who shows up and actually builds the house.

The Secret Sauce: Opus 4.5

Here's what most explanations miss: Claude Code isn't just a clever interface. It's powered by Opus 4.5-Anthropic's most intelligent model.

Think of it this way: Claude Code is the hands. Opus 4.5 is the brain.

Other AI coding tools exist. But they're running on weaker models-like giving a contractor blueprints drawn by an intern. Claude Code is running on the smartest model available, which is why it can handle complex, multi-step tasks that other tools fumble.

This combination-an autonomous agent + the most capable AI model-is why a Google engineer watched it replicate a year of her team's work in an hour. The interface matters. But the intelligence behind it matters more.

Why Everyone Is "Freaking Out"

Three things happened in December 2025 that broke the internet.

1. The Creator Revealed His Workflow

Boris Cherny-the creator of Claude Code at Anthropic-shared how he uses it:

B
Boris Cherny
@bcherny

I'm Boris and I created Claude Code. Lots of people have asked how I use Claude Code, so I wanted to show off my setup a bit. I keep ~10-15 concurrent Claude Code sessions alive: 5 in terminal (tabbed, numbered, with OS notifications), 5-10 in the browser, plus mobile sessions I start in the morning and check in on later.

While one agent runs tests, another refactors code, another writes documentation. One person. The output of a small engineering team.

Key Insight

Boris also dropped this: "In the last 30 days, 100% of my contributions to Claude Code were written by Claude Code." That's 40,000 lines of code-written by the AI, not him.

2. The Google Engineer's Confession

Jaana Dogan's viral admission. Her team at Google spent a year building distributed systems architecture. Claude Code replicated it in an hour.

The reactions ranged from existential dread to immediate job applications at Anthropic.

3. The 74-Minute Experiment

Ethan Mollick, a Wharton professor who studies AI, tested Claude Code's limits. His challenge: Build a $1,000/month startup.

Without any further input, Claude Code:

  • Asked clarifying questions
  • Worked independently for 74 minutes
  • Created hundreds of code files
  • Deployed a working website with payment processing

Mollick had to stop it early for ethical reasons. But the point was made: this isn't autocomplete. It's an autonomous worker.

"But I Don't Write Code"

Here's the thing nobody told me when I first saw "Claude Code":

The "Code" in the name is a misdirection.

Like calling a car "the steering wheel machine."

Yes, Claude Code writes code. But that's not why it matters. The code is just the mechanism. What matters is what it can do.

Last week, I asked Claude Code to analyze 6 months of my calendar data and show me where my time actually went. No code on my end. No spreadsheet formulas. Just: "Here's my calendar export. Show me what's eating my time."

Three minutes later: a visualization breaking down my week, my biggest time sinks identified, three specific suggestions.

That's Claude Code. The code happens behind the scenes. You describe what you want.

What else can it do for non-developers?

  • Tax preparation from bank statements
  • Vacation planning with research extraction
  • Spreadsheet automation and analysis
  • Report generation from raw data
  • Website creation without writing code
  • Email drafting at scale
  • Data visualization from CSV files

If it happens on a computer, Claude Code can do it.

What Makes It Different

Three innovations make Claude Code work differently than ChatGPT.

1. It Takes Notes Before Forgetting

Normal AI tools have a memory problem. They can only "remember" so much conversation before they start forgetting the beginning.

Claude Code solves this by taking detailed notes before clearing its memory. Like having a meeting where someone actually writes things down.

This is why Boris Cherny can run agents for hours without them losing track.

2. It Learns New Jobs on Demand

Claude Code has "skills"-specialized instruction modules that load when needed. React project? It loads React skills. Python? Different skills. Need a beautiful website? There's a Frontend Design skill that transforms Claude into a UI/UX expert.

Ethan Mollick compares it to "acquiring new competencies on demand." We've documented 70+ skills business professionals can use-from data analysis to content creation.

3. It Delegates

Claude Code can deploy other AI models for specific tasks.

It doesn't try to do everything itself. It spins up specialized agents for testing, documentation, or research-while the main agent coordinates.

Less like one employee. More like a project manager with a team.

What You Need to Know Before Starting

Look, I'm not going to pretend this is perfect.

Where You Can Run It

Claude Code started as a Terminal-only tool-that black window developers use. If you've never touched Terminal, that was a real barrier.

That's changed. You can now run Claude Code from:

  • Claude Desktop app - the easiest option, no Terminal required
  • Terminal/CLI - still the power-user option for developers

The Claude Desktop app is the starting point for most people. Download it, sign in, and you can run Claude Code sessions right from the app. No command line. No setup commands. Just describe what you want.

Tip

Start with the Desktop app. Download Claude for Mac or Windows, sign in with your Pro or Max account, and start a Claude Code session. Our setup guide walks you through it step-by-step.

The Cost

Claude Code requires a Claude subscription. Here's how people actually use it:

PlanPriceWho It's For
Pro$20/monthTesting it out, light usage
Max 5x$100/monthDaily users, full Opus 4.5 access
Max 20x$200/monthPower users, multiple agents all day

Most people who stick with Claude Code upgrade to Max. The $20 Pro tier works for getting started, but you'll hit usage limits fast-especially if you're using Opus 4.5, the model that makes Claude Code actually powerful. The Max tiers give you enough Opus capacity to use it as your daily driver.

Is $100-200/month expensive? Compared to what? If Claude Code saves you 10 hours a month, that's $10-20/hour for work that would otherwise require a developer or just not get done.

The Judgment Gap

Claude Code is exceptional at tasks with clear completion criteria. "Build a login page" = perfect. "Make the design feel more premium" = struggles.

It's a tool, not a creative director. Human judgment still matters.

Should You Care?

Hell yes.

Here's the uncomfortable truth:

74% of professionals fear AI will make their skills obsolete. But only 17% have done anything about it.

That gap isn't about access. It's about identity. Most people are waiting for permission to learn this stuff. Waiting to feel "technical enough." Waiting until it's "safe."

While you wait, others are orchestrating fleets of autonomous agents.

This isn't about becoming a developer. It's about becoming the person on your team who knows what's possible.

Karpathy's blunt assessment: professionals who master these tools could become "10X more powerful."

The Bottom Line

Is it overhyped? Probably, yeah. Tech Twitter always loses its mind.

But here's what I can't unsee:

  • A Google engineer admitting her team's year of work was replicated in an hour
  • The guy who built Tesla's AI saying he feels "behind"
  • A Wharton professor watching an AI work autonomously for 74 minutes

Something has shifted. And for the first time in a while, I'm not writing about a technology. I'm using it.

The people who will thrive with AI aren't the most technical. They're the most curious.

If that's you-start. Just start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Claude Code?

Claude Code is Anthropic's AI coding agent that runs in your computer's terminal or desktop app. Unlike a chatbot that returns text you copy elsewhere, Claude Code reads files on your machine, writes and edits them, runs commands, and completes multi-step tasks on its own. You describe the outcome in plain English and it does the work.

Do you need to know how to code to use Claude Code?

No. Claude Code writes all the code itself — you describe what you want in plain English. Non-developers use it daily for data analysis, spreadsheet automation, report generation, and building simple websites. The only prerequisite is basic comfort opening Terminal, which takes about 15 minutes to learn.

How much does Claude Code cost?

Claude Code is included with a Claude subscription: $20/month for Pro (light usage), $100/month for Max 5x (daily users), and $200/month for Max 20x (heavy users). It can also be billed per-token through the Anthropic API. Most people doing serious daily work end up on a Max plan.

What is the difference between Claude Code and ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is built for conversation and generating text you then act on yourself. Claude Code is built to execute — it reads your actual files, makes changes, and runs commands autonomously. The practical difference is a consultant who writes recommendations versus a contractor who builds the thing.

What can non-developers actually do with Claude Code?

Common non-coding uses include analyzing spreadsheets and CSVs, generating recurring reports, cleaning and organizing files, building internal dashboards, synthesizing research, editing video through FFmpeg, and pulling analytics data. Anything that involves manipulating files on your computer is in scope.

Is Claude Code safe to use with company data?

Claude Code runs locally, so your files stay on your machine and it asks permission before executing commands. Prompt content is sent to Anthropic's servers for processing, the same as any hosted AI tool. Treat it like any other cloud AI service and follow your organization's data policy for sensitive material.

What operating systems does Claude Code run on?

Claude Code runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Mac setup is the most documented path and takes roughly 15 minutes end to end, covered step by step in our Claude Code setup guide.
